On November 9, 1989 I had gotten home from school, getting ready for a football game. I had to get ready for the game and I put on CNN because I knew lots of things were happening in Eastern Europe. Then I heard “the East German government has opened the sector borders to West Berlin.” I said “They can’t do that! Because if the East Germans open the sector borders, then what is the point of having the-“. THEN it hit me. This was very important to me personally because just five years before as a boy growing up in West Germany - my father was stationed there with the U.S. Army - I got to go through Checkpoints Alpha, Bravo AND Charlie, and got to see the Wall up close and personal. I still have a picture of me standing with the Wall behind me by Checkpoint Charlie, and you can even see the (presumably) Stasi agents in the background looking at everything through an open apartment window.
